Why install a new combi boiler?

Without question there are many things to consider before think about before buying a new combi boiler.

Do you actually need a new combi boiler installing?

Much hype is giving these days to replacing your gas combi boiler. Upgrading to a new, more efficient, cheaper to run model is probably the most important factor. Especially when you consider the ever increasing rise in your energy bills. Of course when put like this, it does make sense, but if you’re not in a position financially to buy a new boiler, then servicing your existing one could help you.

An annual service will help extend the life of your boiler and heat your home more efficiently, thus potentially lowing the cost of your energy bills. Remember to try and book your service in during the spring/summer months. It could be more convenient than discovering your boiler doesn’t work in winter months!

What type of gas combi boiler do you need?

If you are considering a new gas combi boiler, the next thing to think about is what type of boiler to choose. From looking at the options out there, I have compiled a handy table to help you make this decision.

Combination or ‘combi’ boiler

Good: Combi boilers are the most popular boilers in the UK, they are small, economical to run and, as the water heats up directly from the mains, you’ll not have to wait for your hot water.

Bad: If you have a busy house, with multiple showers and requirements for hot water; be prepared to hear that scream from the shower as someone runs a tap elsewhere.

Sealed system boilers (unvented)

Good: This is a good boiler for a large, busy household using lots of hot water. It stores your hot water in a tank and allows hot water to run simultaneously from multiple outlets.

Bad: You will need a tank in an airing cupboard and when the water does run out, it can take a little while to heat back up.

Open vent and open vent sealed system boilers

Good: This was a very popular boiler system and at one point was in most homes. Showers taps and running baths can all be drawn in any room and simultaneously from multiple outlets.

Bad: As with the sealed system boiler, it can take a while to heat the water up once it has run, and, due to the fact that this requires two hot water tanks, it requires a lot of space.

Back Boilers

Good: Back boilers provide reliable heating and plenty of hot water, again allowing multiple outlets to be used at once.

Bad: They require a lot of space, a boiler hidden behind your chimney, two tanks in the loft and a cylinder in an airing cupboard.

How much will Combi boiler installation cost?

The cost of your boiler will vary, depending on which model you choose. You should be looking at around £600 for a lower end specification boiler, around £800-£900 for a top branded boiler such as Worcester Bosch and upwards of £1500 for a larger condensing gas boiler with more complex features. The cost of installation will vary depending on the company you use.

You may want to look into finance deals offered by Gas Safe central heating companies. Remember, always get a few quotes first and to be on the safe side, ask for some testimonials from previous customers. A good company should always care about what their clients think of their service.

Why do I need an expert to install and new combi boiler?

Most consumers know that installing a new combi boiler is not something to be done by just anyone. It’s is vital that the boiler company and engineer you use are Gas Safe certified. Unfortunately, there are still reports in the press of people trying to fit their boilers themselves with sometimes fatal consequences. A well-fitted boiler, done by a Gas Safe engineer will ensure the safety of those living in the property and maximise the efficiency of your heating and water system.
